JJ Williams of Kiona on Red Mountain & Washington’s One Voice

In 1975, his grandparents planted a vineyard in the middle of nowhere. It became Red Mountain. JJ Williams grew up in a double-wide trailer with vines ten steps from the front door, and today Kiona farms 270 acres with no investors, no hedge fund and no debt. He talks wine math, Ice Age floods, and why Red Mountain fruit never needs turning up to 11.

One Voice was born from the belief that the Washington wine industry is stronger when it speaks with one voice. With The Mark Wine Group leading its efforts, One Voice's mission focuses on driving category awareness and proving that a collaborative approach can transcend individual brand goals to benefit the entire Washington State wine landscape. By uniting as One Voice, we transcend individual competition to champion a collective mission.

Our first WA Wine Camp is in the books. Keep your eye out for lots of photos on all our social media handles. Here, we continue our “One Voice” interviews with winemakers and winery owners as part of our representation of the Washington State Wine Commission wineries to BTG programs at National Accounts.

This month we talked with JJ Williams about his family’s winery, Kiona. Set amid the arid shrub-steppe of Red Mountain, you’ll find this state-of-the-art winery that is a far cry from how it began.

Such a breathtaking spot. And such amazing views from this stunning tasting room and winemaking facility. But it wasn’t always like this, right?

Our family planted the first vineyard on what would become Red Mountain in 1975. My grandparents (John and Ann) took a real leap of faith when they went in with their friends (Jim and Pat Holmes) to plant a vineyard in the middle of nowhere.

I remember you telling us how humble it was at the beginning.

Today our operation is three generations in, and we farm over 270 acres in the AVA. We grow for about 60 of the top winemakers in the Pacific Northwest, as well as our own estate production of approximately 25,000 cases a year. My brother and I grew up in a double-wide trailer that had vines about ten steps from the front door. We don’t have investors, aren’t owned by a hedge fund, and don’t have debt. We’re the quintessential example of a modern American wine producer.

We’re a family farm that happens to run a winery. We own us, we operate us, we make our own decisions from start to finish. When people build a mental image of a family winery, we are it. Multiple generations live onsite. We’re responsible for the product from start to finish. We encapsulate the idea of the estate winery in every sense of the word.

    And the winemaking duties?

My brother is the winemaker. He has a master’s in wine science and made wine all over the world, including stops in Bordeaux, Australia, Chile, South Africa, and New Zealand, before starting up here in 2019. No fancy consulting winemakers that fly in for a weekend, no outsourced expertise. We plant it, we grow it, we make it, and we are proud of it.

Kiona Old Vine Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc was in Kiona's first-ever release in 1980, and estate vines planted in 1976 still make up the core of this wine. It's bright, crisp and fruit-forward, with barrel and amphora lots adding serious texture. Poolside by day, white tablecloth by night.

Kiona Riesling

Built on Kiona's oldest vines, a fan-trained estate block planted in 1975, the year the family planted the first vineyard on Red Mountain. Almost dry and packed with melon, citrus, flowers and spice, with an acidity that makes it a food magnet.

Kiona Lemberger

The original. Kiona bottled America's first commercial Lemberger in 1980 and has kept the cult classic going for more than 40 vintages. Think Pinot Noir with more muscle: deep color, red fruit and spice, and a medium body that pairs with just about anything.

Kiona Estates Cuvée Red Blend

A declassified blend from all five of the family's Red Mountain estate vineyards, built for the glass pour. Red and blue fruit, generous acidity and no mystery sourcing. A crowd-pleaser your guests will be glad to find on the list.

Kiona Estate Merlot

Grown on Kiona Estate, the oldest vineyard on Red Mountain, with Merlot blocks planted as far back as 1976. Powerful yet elegant, and aged mostly in neutral oak so the site does the talking. Three generations of family farming, Sustainable WA certified.

Kiona Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Red Mountain is Washington's Cabernet powerhouse, and this one pulls from all five of the family's estate vineyards. Old estate blocks give it backbone and younger plantings give it muscle: fine-grained tannin, pure red and dark fruit, deep color. Sustainable WA certified from the ground up.

Kiona Estate Chenin Blanc Ice Wine

The real deal. Chenin Blanc is left to freeze naturally on the vine and picked before sunrise from an estate block set in a frost pocket that freezes every year. Intense green and tropical fruit, with acidity that keeps it crisp, not cloying.

Because we grow high-end fruit for lots of other producers, Kiona is inherently a team player in the Washington wine scene: an increase in demand for Red Mountain wine (or Washington wine in general) is good for us. Success for Washington means more demand for grapes. It’s a simple equation.

  2. TM
    The Mark Wine Group

Wine Math! Love it. What do you think distinguishes Washington wine from the wine of other regions?

Washington wine is delicious, competitive, and compelling, but when you hit the market, it feels like we have to work twice as hard to fight for awareness. That we’re all out here, rowing together in the same direction, telling the story, getting the message out in a collaborative way isn’t just novel, it’s a requirement.

  3. TM
    The Mark Wine Group

That is the unified sentiment about Washington Wine and the reason we were hired to get your wines into the glasses at national accounts. What’s the most important thing you would like us to know about Kiona and Washington wines full stop?

    The Mark Wine Group
    JJ Williams
    JW

Most important thing about Kiona: 50+ years and three generations of institutional knowledge to deliver compelling, estate-grown, Red Mountain wines with elegance, power, and geographical typicity. The most important thing about Washington: impeccable balance and drinkability across a wide array of styles, varieties, and price points. It’s the new frontier of American-grown wine.

  4. TM
    The Mark Wine Group

Which also differentiates this winegrowing region from the rest of American wine and the world at large.

The trademark Red Mountain fruit profile is dark, concentrated, and tannic, with pure fruit and powerful structure. It’s an embarrassment of riches, to be honest, but it does change how we manage ferments and élevage. A lot of modern winemaking techniques around the world emphasize extraction: winemakers are looking for more tannin, more color, more power. If we did that here, the wines would be unbearably dense and unenjoyable before 10+ years in the bottle. To that end, we’re constantly looking at ways to elevate elegance, and highlight the power and concentration inherent in the fruit without dialing it up to 11. At Kiona, that means hand-picking, mechanical and optical sorting, twice-daily pump-overs, gentler, larger-format barrels and longer timelines in the cellar, with healthy doses of older/neutral oak.

And we think about the end-consumer and downstream partners during every step of the process. In many ways, they’re right there in the blending room with us. I think the informational pipeline that includes the sellability of a specific product, the acceptance of a stylistic decision, feedback on the products, etc., isn’t filtered through a game of telephone. It’s us. We hear it.

  2. TM

We have a beautiful tasting facility that overlooks the Kiona Estate Vineyard. The crushpad is a 20-second walk from the tasting room, and the cellar is viewable through a window in the floor from the public tasting area. It’s a beautiful, rugged area that breaks the mental image of what Washington state is: this isn’t evergreen-covered mountainscapes, it’s arid shrub-steppe that gets six inches of precipitation per year and a landscape shaped by cataclysmic Ice Age flooding.

  3. TM
    The Mark Wine Group

Exactly. Everyone is always so surprised how arid it is out there. It’s crazy. What is one thing that you want everyone to know?
